Ecolabelling for tourist accommodation
Be part of the national project to communicate your hotel’s environmental impact and highlight your commitment.
What is environmental display ?
Environmental display, created by the Grennelle Environment Roundtable (article 52 of the Grenelle 1 law and article 228 of Grenelle 2), has been practiced in the hospitality sector for several years with a view to potential sectoral development. Environmental display consists of measuring and communicating the environmental impacts of a product or service, whilst adhering to ife cycle analysisprinciples. Each sector defines its calculation rules and the associated process, which makes it a reliable and reproducible method that can quantify the impacts and compare products such as the night’s stay offered to customers.
Betterfly Tourism’s action for environmental display
Betterfly Tourism played an essential role at every stage of the project : creation of the initial method, development of the first sectoral impact database, then the official database; creation of MALICE; the first calculation tool, updated in 2016 and renamed Winggy, helps with writing the reference document, proposal of official label format and training of several stakeholders for regional deployments (CCI, regional and departmental tourism councils, consultant) and in 2016: help with implementation in Morocco in collaboration with the Moroccan Ministry of Tourism and the UNEP.
What are the benefits for web providers ?
Since the beginning of the campaign, the feedback from professionals on environmental display has been very positive. Through the proposed actions, the impacts on each of the environmental indicators can be reduced by 15 to 60 % on average and otel operating costs are reduced by around 0.50 € to 2 € per night Environmental display has not only met the needs of environmentally aware professionals but, more importantly, it has made it possible to reach professionals who were not yet involved. Furthermore, it has been used to strengthen or prepare a European Ecolabel project.
What are the next steps for environmental display ?
In September 2016, more than 200 hotels in France obtained or became involved in experimental labelling..The objective is to roll out the official campaign, in France and abroad. Deployment will be done by creating partnerships with online booking websites (such as FairBooking) for communicating with the general public, and by training regional stakeholders to provide support to professionals (CCI, regional and departmental tourism council), and by training professionals themselves in environmental display.
